The Children’s Laureate Cressida Cowell MBE has called on Downing Street to put primary school libraries at the centre of the government’s response to the pandemic by ring-fencing £100m a year in spending to preserve under-threat facilities.

Hundreds of children, parents and teachers from across England travelled to London last week to protest against schools closing early on a Friday.

Schools will get £400 million in extra capital funding this year, the chancellor has announced. Mr Hammond said the government was "investing record amounts in our schools", but acknowledged that "school’s budgets do not stretch to that extra bit of kit that would make such a difference".

Approximately 1,000 head teachers from across England protested outside Parliament on Friday in a plea for increased school funding.

More than £380 million of a £500 million pot for building capacity in the academies system has been taken back by the treasury at a time when head teachers are protesting about a cash crisis.

A reformation to the school funding system was first announced earlier this year by Nicky Morgan, former secretary of state for education. Her intentions were to change the scheme in order to make it fairer for all schools across the UK.
